Ghost House

Living on Koh Samui I get to absorb the Thai culture & the sometimes crazy island life!

There are a great many mysteries here, which are fun to explore. I am not going to elaborate on the subject of the difference between beautiful girls & beautiful ladyboys, or the Thai alchohol purchasing laws, although they are both worth further consideration!

I am fascinated by the ghost house known here as Spirit Houses, so much so that I sell little replicas of them! Raised above the ground on a high platforms, outside of homes & businesses here on the island. Even business like Thai airlines, Thai restaurants and bars. Some elaborate & very ornate with mirrors, lights, & lots of glittery decoration, others much simpler. The one outside my Thai house is painted in bright cheerful colours,covered in tiny figures, and vases with flowers.

These Spirit Houses are believed to provide a special shelter for the spirits,or celestial beings, who would otherwise reside in the heavens, so this is the home of the spiritual guardian of the property.

Spirit Worship is traced back in history to when Tai's migrated from the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam to all parts of Southeast Asia. Buddhism also came to Southeast Asia, these beliefs developed side by side. Some of the old animistic beliefs are intertwined with Buddhism and some animistic practices still exist in Thailand. One practiced by every Thai is the Spirit House

Most are mischevious
Spirit houses are built by only Expert Spirit House Builders, who must exercise all necessary rituals so that the invited spirits will find it an acceptable earthly abode.
Offerings to the resident spirit may include flowers, food such as meat, fruit and rice. Candles and incense are also seen, the incense lit daily.

Now we can appreciate why the spirit houses need to be treated with care! If a new spirit house is created, to replace an old one. there is a ceremony to ensure that the spirit moves from the old house to the new. Once this is all completed the old spirit house will be discarded, at, or near a temple or Wat.
This explains the old, rickity and abandoned looking spirit houses all piled together, on the side of the road. It seems that when a spirt house is discarded it is put with others which have suffered the same fate! Yes, those piles of spirit houses are deliberate.

Thai Silk

The history of Thai silk is equally as colourful & exotic as the legends of where silk itself originated, some say that it was first discovered in China by Empress Si Ling Chi. The Empress was relaxing under a mulberry tree, enjoying a cup of tea. A silk worm cocoon fell from the tree and landed in her teacup. As she removed it the fine thread started to unravel.

For centuries the Chinese guarded their secret of how to make silk. Raw silk was considered the cloth of the gods and emperors and produced great wealth within the country. Anyone found guilty of selling or transporting silk worms, cocoons or mulberry trees was put to death.

Fragments of pure silk 3,000 years old have been found among the ruins in Baan Chiang, northeast Thailand. Thai silk and Laos silk production has developed over time to become one of the most distinctive types of silk.

Making silk requires knowledge and understanding, and much of current spinning and weaving practice in the silk process is still respectful of tradition. Different silks produced in different regions of the world exhibit distinctly different characteristics.

How silk is made-

Mulberry silk is a natural product made by the silk worm – the caterpillar of a type of silk moth that feeds on the mulberry bush. Kept in a silk house, the silkworms are fed fresh mulberry foliage everyday. As the silkworm reaches pupate stage it spins a cocoon. This silk cocoon is placed in a vat of boiling water to remove the threads. Weavers are known to sing silk songs as they work their looms.

Thai silk fabric is not cheap silk; it’s one of the most unique and stunning textile products in the world. High quality silk production in the Thai silk industry is instrumental in the countries development.

Some interesting facts about silk!

· Raw silk is a natural product made by the silkworm, this is the caterpillar of a type of moth which feeds on the mulberry bush
· Thailand silk has beautiful natural textures and designs unique to Thailand
· Silk cloth resists rot, in ancient times it was used as shrouds & closing sutures in surgery
· Being strong & light it makes ideal silk parachutes, silk stockings and silk body, even silk postcards, silk hankies, hat silk, and silk wallpaper
· Silk burns completely leaving no residue
· Silk weaving in different countries of the world produces a different type of silk, the finished silks all have very different characteristics
· Thai silk saw a massive increase in popularity and sales when Her Majesty the Queen (Thailand) included dresses made of silk in her tour wardrobe
· Painting on silk, creating vibrant orange silk, red silk, green silk, and a myriad of rainbow colours has been practised for centuries, leading to the modern day craft of screen printing

Songkran Festival in mid April In Thailand, as also in the Dai People communities of Southern China [ where the Tai originated from ], the Tai Lao in Laos,and the Buddhist communities in
Cambodia and Myanmar, the Calender New Year is occassioned between 13 and 15 April each year. The Thai use a lunisolar calendar [ both the Sun rotation and
the moon phase rotation ] and the date was fixed on a solar calculation. The word '' Songkran '' is derived from the Indian sancript word '' Sankanta ''
which means '' a change or move ''. The dates are now fixed arbitarily but originally would move with the move of the sun on the vernal equinox. This occured
as a consequence of '' precession '' and the tilt of the earth and the effect of its orbit. Over the past the dates have changed but are now fixed
irrespective of the original rationale and what would otherwise be the astrological calculation. From a natural perspective the dates also signal the end of
the dry season.

Asian elephants are sometimes known as Indian elephants. They are one of the three living species of elephant. Asian elephants are found mostly in India, Indochina, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. Asian elephants are smaller than African elephants and Asian elephants also have smaller ears. This is one of the best ways to tell Asian elephants apart from African elephants. The height of an Asian elephant ranges from 7-12 feet and they weigh approximately 3.25 to 5.5 tons. There are other physical characteristics that separate Asian elephants from their African counterparts. They have a more arched back and also have more nails on the feet. While both male and female African elephants have tusks, female Asian elephants usually do not have these tusks. Females that do have tusks often have tusks that are small and hard to see.

Coconut Wood

Environmentally friendly, coconut wood is an attractive alternative to precious indigenous hardwoods. It is not expensive and can be used as any other wood.

The coconut palm is a monocotyledon; the hardwood comes from the outside unlike a normal tree where it is cut from the centre. The softwood is used to make smaller items

Koh Samui has a long-standing tradition in crafting the coconut wood. It is turned on lathes, in village workshops, to produce pots, bowls, & exotic arts & crafts pieces

Traditionally the islanders would use these utensils in their own homes, now we are lucky enough to share their skills.

Sustainable coconut wood has a striking grain, tactile & organic it is a pleasure to look at, touch & use

Nothing looks better than coconut wood bowls & plates used in food presentation, for soups, salads, noodles & fruit. The wood is food safe, & should be washed by hand in warm soapy water. No dishwashers, or soaking in water.

Zen House to rent, Koh Samui

I know that I lead a charmed life! Living on Koh Samui, working from home, must be one of the greatest privileges.

Each morning I sit at my balcony, with my coffee & gaze at the wooden house opposite. Dying to see inside. I know that the owner isn't here very often, she lives in a different part of Thailand. the house has been untouched since her Mother sadly passed away some 3 years ago

I made a mental plan, I would wait until the next visit by the owner to the house, & then ask her if she would rent it to me.. I don't know why, just too beautiful to be left empty. I don't need a house, I already live in the perfect place for me, a 40 year old village house, traditional Thai style on legs, wooden, simple & with tremendous character.

The day came, OH it would be the one day that I am suffering ill effects from the party the night before- I crawl out of bed, across the soi, meet the lady..she has no English, I have no Thai.

It was like Miss Haversham's house, time had stopped 3 years ago. Undaunted I struck a deal!

I now have the house on a very long lease...since that day I have poured love, sweat & money into the house, it is a beautiful home, new electrics, all clean & fresh, & painted, & scrubbed, & furnished, including some of my Thai Artisan pieces which look fab!

I couldn't resist it- now the house is ready to let & I am looking for tenants, for any length of time, who will appreciate the quiet here, the serenity of the house, the soft original wooden floors

Love Mango Wood!

Mango: (Mangifera indica) Having been cultivated for thousands of years on the Indian sub-continent, mangos reached Asia between 5th to 4th century BC.

Cultivated as a fruit tree, the evergreen trees may grow to 35 or 40m tall, & the crown may have a radius of up to 10m. When the tree flowers, the fragrance is similar to Lilly of the Valley. The fruit may take between three to six month to ripen

Hardwood Mango wood trees are usually cut down once the tree has finished producing the best fruit, typically 20 to 25 years old. Trees are replanted and a there is a sustainable cycle.

Thai artisans now create special home decor pieces with this hard wood, as it works easily, polishing it and giving it a unique glossy look

One beautiful example of this wood being used in a contempory way are these gorgeous flat wooden plates. Food-safe, but not dishwasher safe, just rinse with soft soapy cloth & dry.

Hand-carved Teak Lotus Panels are decorative pieces of wall art & are highly prized in Thai homes and usually prominently featured in the main living area of the home.

Historically the panels are carved from re-claimed teak-wood floorboards, salvaged from very old Thai houses, which cannot be renovated. Hence the panels are created in 30cm wide sections, the width of the old boards. This makes it easier for us to handle & ship, and ultimately easier for you to manage when they are delivered to your home.

The Lotus Panels may be either assembled together, directly next to each other, or slightly apart for a more contemporary feel. One-way to wall mount is to create a shelf & sit the base of the panels next to each other on the shelf. This is very effective way of displaying your prized Lotus panels

Thai musical instruments

Here we have a traditional Thai percussion instrument known as a Ranet ek, or a Thai xylophone. Constructed of wood, it is similar in style & design to a Cambodian xylophone, named roneat ek.

Classical music in Thailand has a long tradition of the Ranet ek featuring heavily as a lead instrument in the piphat ensemble. A kind of ensemble in the classical music of Thailand, piphat features percussion & wind instruments.

Thai people gather to listen to the musicians, whilst watching classical Thai theatre & dance, amongst the more well known are the masked dance-drama (khon ) and classical dance (lakhon) as well as shadow puppet theatre

The Ranet ek player will create melodies using 2 long wooden beaters, or mallets, hitting the 21 or 22 wooden bars, in a rhythmic fashion. Historically the wood used in the making of the bars would be rosewood. The bars are stretched across the boat shaped body of the xylophone using a heavy string.

Talented players are able to play two Ranet Ek's at the same time, standing between the instruments, which would be a 90 degrees to each other.

Thai visual art was traditionally primarily Buddhist. Thai Buddha images from different periods have a number of distinctive styles. Contemporary Thai art often combines traditional Thai elements with modern techniques.
Literature in Thailand is heavily influenced by Indian culture. The most notable works of Thai literature are a version of the Ramayana called the Ramakien, written in part by Kings Rama I and Rama II, and the poetry of Sunthorn Phu.
There is no tradition of spoken drama in Thailand, the role instead being filled by Thai dance. This is divided into three categories- khon, lakhon and likay- khon being the most elaborate and likay the most populist. Nang drama, a form of shadow play, is found in the south.
The music of Thailand includes classical and folk music traditions as well as string or pop music.
